PARTY held OMOTE 3D SHASHIN KAN as the very first solo exhibition in 2012. This is the world’s first 3D photo studio that captures memories of important days such as weddings and graduations through not photos but 3D figurines. We opened a 2-month pop-up store at EYE OF GYRE in Tokyo’s Omotesando area to 3D scan and produce figurines for the general public.

BACKGROUND

In 2012, 3D printers and 3D scanners, mainly used for B-to-B purposes and research and development, were becoming more affordable. We started technical verifications in search of using this technology to create an apparatus closer to everyday life. As a result, we succeeded in constructing a system* for making figurines that resemble individuals. The idea of creating a photo booth for recording, just like using cameras, precious moments such as children’s growth and family gatherings in 3D then came to our heads.*Patent registration underway.

IDEA

First day of school, graduation, wedding…the milestones in life are countless. We wanted to offer an experience of capturing these moments in 3D figurines, with an convenient platform constructed with technology that used to be not readily available to the masses. With this idea, we created 3D photo booth “OMOTE 3D SHASHIN KAN” as PARTY’s solo exhibition.

The figurines can be made in three size variations; the bigger the size, the more intricate. After the 3D scan, the figurines were completed in a period of 1~3 months. “Photo frames” made with transparent cases with a photo frame design lid at the front were also sold at the exhibition.

WORKFLOW

The first step of technical verification was to use 3D scanners to photograph the human body. By analyzing the 3D scan data containing 3D information and color information, we found that both sets of data required modifications and refinement. We then constructed a correction program for the 3D scan data to ensure the production of high quality 3D figurines.

In addition to the photographing and 3D data production, we also worked on service development which included selecting a 3D printing company, finding a venue for the pop-up, designing the storefront and installation space, collaborating with influencers to make sample figurines, training the shop staff. Three months from the initial idea, we launched this original service and offered all customers their one-and-only figurines.

OMOTE 3D SHASHIN KAN figurine prototypes were developed in collaboration with Rhizomatiks and Engine Film.
